How to Get Involved at the Oakwood Historical Society

We invite you to get involved with The Oakwood Historical Society. There are many ways to get involved: become a volunteer, member, or be a artifact donor.

Committees work on the ongoing programs and projects that support the mission of the Oakwood Historical Society. Please contact us via phone or through the contact page on this website for more information on volunteering.

Archives/ Acquisitions Committee

The Oakwood Historical Society archives contain a variety of interesting documents and materials concerning the history of Oakwood institutions, families, and development of the area. Located in the City Building, volunteers assist the Archives chair with the organization and care of these valuable research materials.

Education Committee

This committee promotes the history of Oakwood through special projects including, among other educational initiatives, newsletter articles, website development, educational programs, and historical/architectural tour booklets.

Facilities Development/Maintenance Committee

The Oakwood Historical Society owns the Long-Romspert Homestead, which was built in 1863 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Adult and youth volunteers contribute to the ongoing restoration and maintenance of the Homestead.

Fundraising/Finance Committee

This committee supports the fundraising and financial records of the society. Volunteers help with annual special events include the Old Fashion Summer Picnic and the Home Restoration Fair.

Gardens/Grounds Committee

The gardens and grounds of the Long-Romspert Homestead are lovingly cared for by volunteers. There are several volunteer opportunities on this committee throughout the spring and summer months.

Membership Committee

This committee runs the fall membership drive and maintains the membership database and records. Membership volunteers help with mailings and special projects.

Preservation Committee

The preservation committee works on projects that promote the architecture of Oakwood, such as the preservation handbook for homeowners. This active committee seeks volunteers committed to preserving the charm and historical significance of Oakwood.

Program Committee

This committee organizes monthly educational and entertaining programs for society members and friends. Topics range from Oakwood architecture and history to tours and presentations at local historic sites. Volunteers assist in the planning and execution of these events. For example, we have dedicated volunteers who bake for our social time before the monthly programs.

Public Relations/Newsletter Committee

Published quarterly, the Oakwood Historical Society newsletter provides information about upcoming events and projects. The newsletter also features interesting educational articles about Oakwood history and architecture. Additionally, this committee promotes Society events through special press releases and postcard mailings. Volunteers are encouraged to submit articles for the newsletters that focus on Oakwood and its residents. Other volunteers help with mailings and special projects.
